Culture, Monuments
Via dei Mergulensi - 96100 Siracusa

The palace Mergulense – Montalto is located in the ancient Spirduta (“spidduta“), the island of Ortigia.

The building dates back to the fourteenth century and is characterized by a medieval prospectus with carved dark stones, typical of the fourteenth century architecture of Syracuse. It is one of the best and most successful examples of Gothic.

Built by the noble Macciotta Mergulense in 1397, in the fifteenth century the palace was donated by Queen Constance of Aragon to the Montalto family; then in 1837, as a consequence of cholera, it was arranged as a hospital and later guested the religious community of the Daughters of Charity.

The facade has an arched door and three large windows with pointed arches, decorated with geometric and floral motifs. It is also enriched by a beautiful shrine decorated with corbels, below which you can see a large stylized “M” and the Latin inscription dedicated to Maciotta Mergulense.
